Kilimanjaro 2022

Mount Kilimanjaro: Africa’s Rooftop

Rising majestically from the plains of Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa, soaring to 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level. It’s a stratovolcano composed of three cones—Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira—with Kibo being the highest and housing the summit known as Uhuru Peak. Unlike jagged alpine ranges, Kilimanjaro’s freestanding silhouette offers a dramatic profile, its snow-capped crown contrasting against surrounding savannas. Climbers journey through five ecological zones: cultivated farmland, rainforest, heath, alpine desert, and arctic summit. The mountain’s accessibility—requiring no technical climbing—has made it a bucket-list expedition for adventurers from all walks (and wheels) of life.

Wheelchair Ascent: A Testament to Human Spirit - Truth be told, that is, a wheelchair ain’t got no place on a mountain! 😂

Climbing Kilimanjaro in a wheelchair is a feat that defies perceived limitations and celebrates resilience. Though the terrain is rugged and unforgiving—marked by rocky trails, steep ascents, and thinning air at high altitudes - determined athletes and adaptive adventurers have pioneered paths up the mountain. I used a specialised off-road wheelchair, support team (key to the climb), and sheer willpower to conquer this bad boy inch by inch! Key to navigating routes like the Marangu or Rongai, which are considered among the more manageable. Each push upward becomes symbolic—not just of personal triumph, but of expanding the narrative around possibility and inclusion. The ascent transforms from a physical journey into a profound statement of courage, unity, and human potential. In short it was nothing less than biblical!
